IBS / IBD Management
In the UK the incidence of gut related disorders is very high - as many 1 in 5 of us are diagnosed with IBS or IBD. Gut related illness can be extremely debilitating on many levels. Many of us become incapacitated physically and worn down emotionally by the experience.
I have been trained in a gut-directed treatment approach for managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Diseases Such as Chrone's, Coeliac, Diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis or Upper Gut Problems such as Reflux and Hiatus Hernia. This approach has been researched at the University Hospital of South Manchester.
Treatment with me consists of 12 sessions that combine cognitive behavioural techniques with gut-directed hypnotherapy and other strategies for managing gut problems and the impact they can have on our life.
I've been struggling with my symptoms despite the medication I am taking, what can gut-drected therapy offer me?
You will have an opportunity to learn more about the relationship between your mind and body and how the gut works. Sessions focus on how to use your mind to influence the processes of the gut. In addition we explore what in your life is stressful and I will teach you how to manage stress. The approach I take is wholistic.
How effective is gut-directed therapy?
Treatment can be remarkably effective for people with gut and digestive issues. Dr Peter Whorwell from the University Hospital of South Manchester integrates hypotherapy in his gastroenterology practice and reports an 80% success rate. He has conducted several research studies which show that the benefits of gut-directed therapy had been sustained when patients were followed up several years after the initial treatment.
Why do you use CBT as well as gut-directed hypnotherapy?
When you have been suffering from any physically debiltating symptoms it is easy to get into a mind set that unwittingly contributes to perpetuating the worries and fears you may have about your health and general wellbeing. My aim is to help you in as many ways as I can to learn how to continue to keep yourself feeling good. Think of it as an investment in your future wellbeing that will benefit you in all areas of your life as well as your gut health.
What happens in sessions and how many do I need?
The way sessions are conducted is the same as for counselling sessions in general but with the addition of the use of gut-directed hypnosis and possibly other techniques that may be helpful. To begin with I will gather information about your particular symptoms and your lifestyle and stressors. After the initial session we will spend part of each session reviewing how things have been and any issues arising. The other part of the session focuses on using hypnotherapy. I will record the hypnotic part of the session for you to use between sessions and send you a link to either stream or download the recording to listen. The treatment framework for gut-directed therapy is 12 sessions.
Am I under your control in hypnosis?
No! You will be aware of what is happening and able to open your eyes at any time should you choose to.
What if I can't be hypnotised?
Nearly everyone can enter a hypnotic state, in actual fact we are in and out of different forms of trance all the time ... there's the shopping trance, the driving trance ... you get the idea! The depth of hypnosis is irrelevant to a successful outcome, if you want it to happen and are motivated for change you will achieve good results.
What is hypnosis like?
Hypnosis takes you into a state that is a bit like day-dreaming, as you get more familiar with the experience you will feel progressively more relaxed and comfortable. You are aware of everything that is said to you and remain in control, I am your guide.
